Walk This Way: A Floor Reno Story (and what you can learn from it)

When my friend Jenny and her partner were renovating their terrace in Stanmore, the floors were the least of their worries - until allergies and cold toes made it clear the carpet had to go and new floor boards were in order. Here's their story.

Investing in quality flooring can make all the difference
Investing in quality flooring can make all the difference

Step 1: Choosing to restore or renovate your floor

Jenny had dreams of pulling back the carpet and sanding the original timber floors. Unfortunately reality hit harder than a Bunnings sausage on a Sunday arvo.

The original timber floorboards underneath were far gone - borer damage, deep staining from the old "black Japan" finish, and draughty gaps that led cold creep in. And carpet wasn't going to cut it. Jenny opted for new floorboards.

Step 2: Choosing the right materials for your floor

Jenny wanted a local hero - strong, natural, light. They landed on engineered Blackbutt - a sturdy Aussie species with a light, natural look. It gave them the warmth of real timber, but with extra durability and less upkeep.

Step 3: Go pro, or know your limits

Jenny and her partner are DIYers - but not for this job. A trusted floorer (recommended by a colleague) made all the difference, especially with levelling and laying boards correctly.

Quick Tip: Get quotes, ask about product warranties, and make sure they understand your subfloor situation before starting. Don't let the cheapest tradie talk you into a 'creative solution'.

Step 4: Timing of install

Re-flooring was saved for last during Jenny's renovation to keep new floors pristine during the rest of the reno chaos. Smart move.

Total install time for the new floors? Around two weeks.

Final thoughts

No disasters so far, and while it's still wrapping up (stay tuned) - it already looks like it will make the space warmer, brighter and better underfoot.

Good floors are like good jeans. You might hate the price tag, but you'll wear them every day.
